Every April this shop has the same conversation four or five times a week. Somebody has played their first two rounds of the year, come up short on every approach, and concluded that something has gone wrong with their equipment over the winter.
Nothing has. Cold weather golf is simply a different distance game, and the size of the difference is larger than almost anybody expects until they see it written down.
The yardage loss comes from three independent mechanisms that stack on top of each other, which is why the total is bigger than any individual explanation suggests.
The air is denser. Cold air holds more molecules in the same volume. A ball moving through denser air experiences more drag, which shortens the shot. This is the effect people usually know about and it is roughly the smallest of the three in the temperature range that matters for golf.
The ball is stiffer. A golf ball is a piece of engineered polymer, and polymers get harder as they get colder. A cold ball deforms less against the face, which means less energy is stored and returned, which means lower ball speed for the same clubhead speed. A ball that has been in the boot of your car overnight at thirty-five degrees is noticeably slower off the face than the same ball at seventy.
You are swinging differently. Nobody makes their full, free turn in four layers of clothing on a forty-degree morning. Clubhead speed drops, sometimes by several miles an hour, and everybody underestimates this because it does not feel like a shorter swing from the inside.
Here is a set of numbers from our own bay, using a mid-speed player hitting the same seven iron on three different days, with the ball conditioned to ambient temperature each time:
Thirteen yards from one end of the season to the other, on the same club and the same swing. For most amateurs that is more than a full club, and it is the entire explanation for the April complaint.
A convenient rule of thumb that holds reasonably well in the range we play in: expect roughly two yards of carry loss on a mid iron for every ten degrees below seventy. It is approximate, it varies with ball speed, and it understates things below about forty-five degrees because the ball stiffness effect accelerates. But it will get you close enough to club correctly.
One counterintuitive point, because it comes up every summer. Humid air is less dense than dry air at the same temperature, not more. Water vapour molecules are lighter than the nitrogen and oxygen they displace.
So a muggy July afternoon in Iowa is a slightly longer ball day than a dry one at the same temperature, not shorter. The reason humid days feel shorter is that they are usually still and oppressive and everybody is swinging worse, not that the air is thick. The effect is small compared to temperature, but it goes in the opposite direction to what most golfers assume.
You cannot repeal physics, but you can stop being surprised by it, and you can eliminate the one part of it that is genuinely under your control.
There is a genuine fitting implication here, particularly for golfers over about fifty-five who play a lot of shoulder-season golf in this state.
If your clubhead speed drops several miles an hour in cold weather because of clothing and stiffness in your own body, a shaft that is right for you in July can be genuinely too stiff for you in April. This is one of the arguments for lightweight graphite in irons that gets dismissed too readily around here. A slightly lighter, slightly softer setup that costs you a yard in midsummer and buys you five in the shoulder seasons is a good trade if two thirds of your rounds are outside the warm months.
We do not push that on anybody, and plenty of golfers correctly prefer the feel of steel. But when a sixty-year-old walks in complaining about April distance, the temperature is the first answer and the shaft weight is the second, and the second one is at least fixable.
The useful shift is to stop treating your summer yardages as the true ones and everything else as a deficit. You have a range. Knowing where the top and bottom of that range sit, and roughly where you are on any given day, is a skill that saves more shots than a two-yard equipment gain ever will.
Every iron session here ends with two printed ladders for this reason: one at seventy degrees and one at forty-five. Same clubs, same swing, two different sets of numbers, both of which are true.
