The Vocabulary, Without the Sales Language
Six terms cover almost every shaft conversation that happens in this shop. Learn these and you can argue with any fitter in the state, including us.
Weight
The single most consequential number on a shaft, and the one most often ignored in favour of flex. Weight sets how much effort it takes to move the club and, indirectly, how much control you have over where the face points. Too heavy and your tempo shortens and the strike drifts toward the heel. Too light and the club gets ahead of you, usually showing up as a fast, uncontrolled release.
Weight is stated in grams for the raw shaft. Driver shafts commonly run forty to eighty-five, iron shafts fifty-five to a hundred and thirty. A twenty gram change is enormous. A five gram change is felt by roughly half the golfers we test.
Flex
Flex is a manufacturer's own label, not an industry standard. One company's Stiff can be softer than another's Regular, and both can be softer than a third company's Senior. This is not a conspiracy, it is just an absence of a governing measurement.
What we actually measure is frequency, in cycles per minute, on a clamped shaft. That number is comparable across brands in a way that a letter on a sticker is not. Two shafts both labelled Stiff can sit fifteen cycles apart, which is more than a full flex of real difference.
Bend Profile
Where along the shaft the bending happens, usually described loosely as low, mid or high launch. A shaft that bends more near the tip presents more loft at impact and tends to launch higher; one that is stiff in the tip section holds loft down and launches lower.
This matters more in Iowa than it does in a calm climate, because a high, soft flight gives back much more into a headwind than the still-air numbers suggest. Two shafts that carry within three yards of each other in a quiet bay can be eleven yards apart into a twelve mile breeze.
Torque
How much the shaft twists around its own axis under load, in degrees. Lower resists twisting more. It is frequently sold as a proxy for quality, which it is not.
A golfer with an aggressive transition often benefits from lower torque because it keeps the face more stable through impact. A golfer with a smooth tempo can find the same shaft harsh and dead, and may hit it worse than a higher-torque option that lets the face release. Torque is a matching problem, and it cannot be evaluated separately from weight and bend profile.
Tip Trim
How much material is cut from the tip end before installation. This is the part of shaft behaviour that is entirely in the builder's hands, and it is where a badly assembled club goes wrong invisibly.
More tip trimming stiffens the tip section and lowers launch and spin. Less keeps the tip softer. The manufacturer publishes a trim chart, and following it is not optional; a shaft trimmed off-chart plays like a different shaft entirely. Every club that leaves this bench is trimmed to the published chart unless the fitting explicitly called for something else and it is written on your spec sheet.
Spine and Orientation
No shaft is perfectly uniform around its circumference. There is usually a stiffer plane, often called the spine, created by the seams in the manufacturing process. Orienting that plane consistently across a set means every club bends the same way relative to the face.
How much this is worth is genuinely debated in the industry, and anybody who tells you it is worth ten yards is selling something. What it reliably does is make a set behave consistently club to club, which matters most in irons where you expect the same shot shape from every number.

The cheapest variable is grip size. Before you spend three hundred dollars on a shaft, spend twelve on the correct grip core plus build-up. Hand action changes more than most golfers expect, and it is reversible in ten minutes.
