What a ballooning flight actually gives back when the air moves sideways.

Somebody tells you to add loft to your driver roughly once a season. Sometimes it is a playing partner, sometimes it is a magazine, and increasingly it is a video from somebody standing next to a launch monitor. The advice is not wrong. It is simply incomplete in a way that causes about half the golfers who follow it to end up hitting the ball shorter.
Here is the version with the condition attached: adding loft increases carry for a golfer whose spin loft is currently too low for their launch, and reduces total distance for a golfer whose spin loft is already adequate. Everything else in this piece is an explanation of that sentence.
Start with the thing that catches most people. The number stamped on the sole of your driver describes how the head was manufactured, measured at a standard reference position. It is not what the face presents to the ball at the moment of contact.
Delivered loft is what actually matters, and it moves with three things: where your hands are relative to the ball at impact, how much the shaft has bent forward or backward through the release, and how the head is oriented on its path. In our bay, the gap between stamped and delivered loft routinely runs three to four degrees, and we have seen it exceed six.
Which means the golfer who says "I play a nine and a half" may be delivering fourteen. If that golfer follows generic advice and adds two more degrees, they are now delivering sixteen and they will lose real distance, because at sixteen degrees a driver is producing far more spin than it needs to stay in the air.
Spin loft is the difference between the direction the club is travelling and the loft the face is presenting. If your club is moving upward at two degrees and the face is delivering fourteen degrees of loft, your spin loft is twelve. That difference is what generates backspin.
A driver needs enough spin to stay airborne and hold a line, and not so much that it climbs and stalls. For most amateur clubhead speeds the useful window sits somewhere between about ten and fourteen degrees of spin loft, with slower speeds needing the higher end.
Now the practical implication. If your spin loft is nine, your ball flight is probably low and knuckling, it falls out of the sky early, and it gives back badly into a breeze. Adding loft here is the correct answer and it will buy you carry. If your spin loft is already thirteen, adding loft pushes you to fifteen or sixteen, spin climbs, the ball balloons, and you lose both carry and roll. Same advice, opposite outcome.
The second number is angle of attack: whether the clubhead is moving upward or downward through impact. This is where the "loft up" conversation gets genuinely interesting, because attack angle and loft interact directly.
A golfer hitting two degrees down on a driver needs more head loft to reach a given launch angle, and they will produce more spin doing it, because hitting down increases spin loft. A golfer hitting three degrees up reaches the same launch angle with less head loft and less spin. That is why upward attack angle is described as free distance: it raises launch and lowers spin at the same time, which is the one combination that unambiguously produces more carry.
So when somebody with a negative attack angle asks whether they should add loft, the honest answer is usually "add loft, and also move the ball forward and raise the tee, and let us see whether we can get the attack angle closer to level first". Fixing the attack angle is worth more than the loft change, and it is free.
Total distance is carry plus roll, and roll is governed largely by descent angle. A ball arriving at thirty-five degrees releases; a ball arriving at forty-five degrees mostly stops. Adding loft raises apex and steepens descent, so it will always cost you some roll.
On a soft, receptive fairway in May this barely matters, because you were not getting much roll anyway. On firm, dry August ground it matters a great deal, and the golfer who added two degrees in spring can find themselves twelve yards shorter in total distance by late summer despite carrying it the same.
The honest way to make this decision is to look at both columns. We print carry and total, in still air and into a modelled twelve mile headwind, for every configuration tested. Sometimes the higher loft wins all four columns, in which case the decision is easy. More often it wins two and loses two, and the right answer depends on the courses you play and the time of year you play most.
If you have access to any launch monitor, this is a ten minute exercise and you do not need a fitting to do it.
Two cautions. First, throw out your best strike of each set before comparing, because a single flushed ball will mislead you every time. Second, do this indoors or on a calm day. Testing a loft change in a swirling wind produces data you cannot interpret.
Local conditions push the answer in a specific direction. Wind is a constant on most courses in this part of the state, and a high-spin ballooning flight is punished harder here than it is on a sheltered parkland layout. That means the ceiling on useful loft is a little lower than a generic recommendation would suggest.
At the same time, the ground is soft for a good chunk of the season, which reduces the cost of losing roll. April and May golf in this state is essentially a carry game. So the practical answer for many local golfers is a slightly higher loft with a shaft profile that keeps spin under control, which is a different solution from simply turning the hosel up two degrees and hoping.
That is the whole argument for measuring rather than guessing. Loft is not a dial that goes from worse to better. It is a trade, and the terms of the trade are set by numbers that are specific to you.
